Garry Hynes

Since founding the company in 1975 Garry and Druid Theatre Company have been on a remarkable journey. Druid has toured the length and breadth of Ireland and has toured extensively overseas making it one of the premier theatre companies in the English-speaking world. Throughout her career, Garry has received numerous awards, notably when in 1998 she made history on Broadway by becoming the first woman to win a Best Director Tony Award (the theatre industry’s equivalent of the Oscars) and in 2005 when she was the recipient of the Freedom of Galway City, the highest honour a city can bestow upon one of its citizens.

 

Outside of her work with Druid, Garry has worked with The Abbey and Gate Theatres (Ireland) and internationally with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Court in the UK; Second Stage, Signature Theater, and the Manhattan Theater Club in New York; the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles; and the Spoleto Festival (USA).

1988     Honorary Doctorate from the National Council for Education Awards

1997     Honorary Doctorate from the National University of Ireland, Galway

1998     Tony Award for Direction for The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh

2002     Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Award for Best Direction for Sive by J.B. Keane

2004     Honorary Doctor­ate  (Litt.D) from Trinity College Dublin

2005     The Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Special Tribute Award for her con­tribution to Irish Theatre

2006     Awarded Freedom of Galway City

2009     Joe A. Callaway award (New York) for Outstanding Direction for Druid’s production of

             The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh

2011     Honorary Doctorate of Literature (DLitt) from University College Dublin.

2012     Best Director (for DruidMurphy) at the Theatre Awards UK

2016     Irish Times Irish Theatre Award for Best Direction for DruidShakespeare

2017     Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland.
